Alyson Forbes

Alyson brings to her practice at the Faculty of Advocates considerable advocacy experience sound judgement and a methodical approach to case preparation gained from her 21 years as a public prosecutor. During her career Alyson gained considerable experience prosecuting the full range of both summary and solemn cases and undertaking Fatal Accident Inquiries.

Alyson spent a number of years as Head of the Solemn Unit in the Procurator Fiscal office in Edinburgh overseeing the preparation of all solemn cases but continuing to prosecute solemn cases and as Head of the High Court Team preparing all High Court cases from that office.

Alyson was a member of the Crown Office Lockerbie Prosecution Team and undertook other Crown Office specialist posts. She was a Principal Procurator Fiscal Depute for 3 years in Crown Office High Court Unit indicting a number of high profile cases and was a Principal Procurator Fiscal Depute in the Crown Office Appeals Unit again working on a number of high profile appeals. She has a keen interest in sentence and conviction appeals.

Alyson was seconded to the Office of the Advocate General to provide a criminal practitioner’s experience on devolution issues. In that office and while in Crown Office Appeals Unit Alyson worked on appeals proceeding in the UK Supreme Court. (Martin and Miller v HMA 2010 UKSC 10 and McGowan v B 2012 SCCR 109).

Alyson has spoken at a wide range of COPFS seminars on topics such as prosecution of sexual offences and taking evidence from vulnerable witnesses and has conducted workshops for precognoscers preparing High Court precognitions. Alyson is a qualified NITA Trainer.

Since calling in 2014 Alyson has been well instructed as a Crown Junior including 2 murder cases (HMA v Gary Lockhart and HMA v Jamie Grieve) and a number of rape cases involving vulnerable witnesses. Alyson has been instructed in her own right in a number of sentence appeals including 1 appeal which she argued successfully at a full hearing.  She has also been appointed as an Ad Hoc Advocate Depute.
